Polymers and Classification
What is Polymer?
Polymer, a giant molecule, with high molecular mass consist of large number of repeating units, which are known as monomers.
Classification of Polymers:-
Polymers can be classified in few sections based on their
(I) Source of origin
(a) Natural (b) Semi Synthetic (c)Synthetic
(ii) Structure
(a) Linear (b) Branched (c)Crossed Link
(iii) Molecular Force
(a) Elastomer (b)Fibre (c) Thermoplastic (d) Thermosetting
(iv) Nature of monomer units
(a) Homo Polymer (b) Co Polymer
Elastomers:-
They have weakest attraction force in between polymeric chains. They are amorphous with high degree of elasticity
Fibre:-
These type of polymers have strongest intermolecular force of attractionbetween polymeric chains. Due to strong force of attraction they have high tensile strength.
Thermoplastics :-
They have intermediate intermolecular force of attraction in between molecules. It becomes soft after hearing but again gets rigidness after cooling. This process of giving heat and cooling can be repeated so many times.
POLY VINYL CHLORIDE is a kind of Thermoplastic
Thermosetting:-
Low molecular mass substance which can be mold on heating. But unlike thermoplastic the chemical composition gets changed for them .Process of giving heat and cooling can not be repeated so many times.
Bakelite is one kind of thermosetting
Homopolymer:-
Made up of same type of monomers
Copolymer:-
Made up of different type of polymers
Conclusion:-
We can conclude that polymers that are made from monomer acts based on their structure and help to make different kind of materials.
